Chart of the day: A divide over role of government


Critics from the Left see government as too much involved in spying on us and bombing folks in other lands, while those on the Right, whipped to a frenzy by media reliant on ads from major corporations, want a massive downsizing of governmental regulatory powers.

Only when a crisis comes along like, say, 9/11 do views switch, if only for a moment.

So the results of this Gallup poll shouldn’t surprise anyone:

  1. Not either/or. The govt does too much of the wrong things and not enough of the right things. There is a chasm between what the govt thinks it should do and what the people think it should do.
