While the world teeters on the brink of another catastrophic war in the Middle East, perhaps it’s time to look again at the main reason other powers in the region might have to embark on a nuclear weapons program.
As Tim Frank reported for the BBC two years ago:
Israel is one of only four states (along with North Korea, India and Pakistan) not to have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It is widely believed to have atomic bombs, although there has never been any certainty or clarity about Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
The single whistle-blower there was, Mordechai Vanunu, paid a heavy price. He passed details to the Sunday Times newspaper about the highly secret nuclear research facility he worked at, next to the southern Israeli town of Dimona. After being snatched by Israeli agents abroad, in 1986, he spent 18 years in prison.
But the global consensus has overtaken the official Israeli refusal to confirm or deny whether the country holds nuclear weapons. Only this week, Henry Kissinger, the former National Security Adviser and Secretary of State to two US presidents, spoke, on the BBC, about “Israeli nuclear weapons”.
Whether or not Iran has launched a bomb-building program remains very much in doubt, with key military officials in Washington saying it hasn’t made a decision yet, and many former Israeli intelligence and military officers agree.
In that light, consider this 2001 BBC documentary about another secret nuclear program that’s already built bombs, lots of bombs, yet remains an official state secret in the U.S. — even though some of the key technology was smuggled out of the U.S. by Israeli spies, in a plot headed by a famous Hollywood producer.
Did you catch that phrase “nuclear ambiguity,” meaning the willful blindness to Israel’s nuclear program exercised by every American president since Richard Nixon?
Is it any wonder that the U.S. is considered hypocritical by much of the world?
Consider also that propaganda depicting Iran as a nation nurturing a deep, racist hostility toward Jews, then watch this clip of young Israeli Jews mobbing a Jerusalem shopping center Monday following a Beitar Jerusalem soccer match.
For nearly an hour, the mob rampaged through the shopping center, madly screaming “Death to Arabs” and other violent slogans, spat on and abused Arab women, and brutally beat those who tried to rescue them:
As Haaretz reports today, only now are police — who took 40 minutes to intervene in the racist riot in the heart of the city — beginning to launch a criminal investigation of the riot, and that’s only after the event drew wide notice in the Arab world press.
